Saqiet El Misk - Bhersaf

Saqiet El Misk - Bhersaf (ساقية المسك - بحرصاف) is a Lebanese local authority which is located in Matn District (Qada'a), an administrative division of Mount Lebanon Governorate (Mohafazah). The municipality is member of Federation of Matn Ech Chemali Es Sahli Oual Aoussat Municipalities.

Etymology

The village was named ’Saqiet’ (to water) ’el Misk’ (musk) for the abundance of water that irrigates its musky-scented trees and flowers. Many pine trees are found in the village and stream-side linden trees give the water a pleasant odor. The villages of Sakiet el Misk and Bhersaf are considered one area of land and share the same municipality, profiled below.

The population is estimated at 2224 residents in Saqiet El Misk, which rises to 2500 in the summer season and is distributed among 650 households. Registered voters numbered 1420 in 2000, out of which 852 voted. They are distributed by confession as follows:

• Maronite: 76.7 %
• Armenian Orthodox: 7.1 %
• Catholic: 6.4%
• Orthodox: 5%
• Other: 4.8%

• Other: 1.9%

Saqiet El Misk and Bhersaf share one municipal council made up of 12 members, four from the latter and eight from the former. The village also has one mayor and three elected officials.

Owing to its touristic nature, the town has five restaurants and three hotels.

Characteristics

The remains of Roman and Phoenician castles, as well as the Mar Yousef Monastery for the Antonian priesthood and the Lazarist Monastery are found in Bhersaf.
