Etymology : There are various meanings of the name:
- “Tannoura” is a Syriac and Aramaic word which means a traditional oven or “Tannur”
- A word formed of two parts: “Tan”, which means “smoke” and “nour”, which means “light”
- “Bet nura” is a Syriac and Aramaic word formed of two parts: “bet”, which means “place” and “nura”, which means “fire”. The word would then mean the “place of fire”. This theory was adopted by Writer Anis Freiha in his book “Names of Lebanese cities and villages”.

The number of registered residents in the Personal Status records is estimated at 1,100 people who belong to the Druze confession. There are around 120 houses in the town.

There were 550 voters in 2004, compared to 499 in 2000.

Voters are distributed in the following families :

- Abu Zour 260 voters
- Taqi 145 voters
- Serhal 83 voters
- Qassam 25 voters
- Merhi 20 voters
- Raidan 17 voters

A municipality was established in line with Decision no.116 of January 31, 1964; however, the municipal council is currently dissolved. There is also a mukhtar and a mayoral council. Tannoura’s share from the independent municipal fund in 2002 reached 36.1 million LBP, 44.6 million LBP in 2003 and 27.7 million LBP in 2004.

Archeological Sites : Roman ruins were found in Tannoura, including a sarcophagus and an altar.

Problems facing the residents : One of the main problems facing the town is lack of potable water, which forces residents to get water from nearby sources. The municipality has been trying vainly to resolve this problem.
