Expectations were met and others were disappointed. Municipal elections were carried out in scheduled time without any further delay or prolongation of the existing municipal councils.
Voters
The total number of registered voters is 3 311 003 distributed to various cities and villages of Lebanon. The largest number of voters is registered in Mount Lebanon Mohafazat reaching to approximately 795 000 voters. In comparison with 2004 elections, voters reached to 2 943 924 with an additional 367 076 voters at an increasing rate of 12.5%.
Municipal councils
In Lebanon, there are 964 municipal councils including 18 councils that were initiated during May 2009 and April 2010. Municipal councils include 11 442 elected members, while in previous elections which took place in 2004, there were only 905 municipal councils including 10 668 elected members.
The number of members in each municipal council is determined by the number of registered residents:
- 9 members are identified for a municipality whose registered population is under 2000 residents. Total number is 413 municipalities.
- 12 members for a municipality whose registered population is between 2001 and 4000 residents recording 257 municipalities.
- 15 members for a municipality whose registered population is between 4001 and 12000 residents recording 237 municipalities.
- 18 members for a municipality whose registered population is between 12001 and 24000 residents recording 39 municipalities.
- 21 members for a municipality whose registered population is more than 24000 residents recording 16 municipalities.
- 24 members for the municipalities of Beirut and Tripoli.
