Territorial administration of Lebanon
The Governorate (Muhafazah, Mohafazah, محافظة) is an administrative division of Lebanon. It is generally divided into District (Qada’a). Only Beirut have no division.
In 2003, the number of governorates increased from six to eight, with the creation of two additional Baalbek-Hermel Governorate and Aakkar Governorate.
Each Governorate is headed by a Mohafez (governor). The Mohafez is appointed by decree of the Council of Ministers. He is hierarchically subordinate to the Minister of the Interior.
